We have a lot to gain by paying attention to and appreciating what wonderful creatures birds are and what they can offer us. Birdwatching doesn’t have to mean being able to identify every bird you come across – a more meaningful way to enjoy birds is to really watch, listen and get to know the habits of a few rather than the names of a hundred. There’s evidence that listening to birdsong is good for our wellbeing, leading us into a state of ‘relaxed alertness’ and improving our mood. And if we look out and listen for birds as we sit or walk, it leads to a greater feeling of connection with nature and our environment. It helps to sit quietly for a while to tune into the different sights and sounds, and to encourage birds to come closer to you. This ‘Sit Spot’ exercise is recommended for observing wildlife. Sit or lie still for at least 20 minutes in one spot and notice what you can see and hear around you. Pick somewhere nice and quiet where you won’t get disturbed, preferably close to your home so you can return to the place regularly – it might even be in your garden. Start to recognise the birds that you see there, tune into their song and observe their behaviours. Notice how their calls change as you sit and ask yourself what it might be that they’re communicating. Take a guided birdwatching walk or download an app to help you to recognise and identify different birds and their language, but be warned it’s a highly addictive pastime.
